PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Gonzaga University dropped a 7-1 decision to Texas Tech University at the Palm Springs Classic Saturday morning.
The Bulldogs (6-5) struggled to score runs off of another tough starting pitcher for the second consecutive day, scoring for the first time in two days on a ninth-inning solo home run from junior catcher Tyson Van Winkle. Gonzaga sophomore starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter (2-1) struck out a career-high nine but did allow five earned runs in his five-inning effort to suffer his first loss of the season.
Texas Tech starting pitcher A.J. Ramos earned the win after holding the Zags scoreless and striking out nine in his six innings of work. The Bulldogs and Red Raiders (6-7) each finished with eight hits.
After the first three innings went scoreless, Texas Tech eventually broke through scoring runs in each of the next four innings. TTU scored its first run on a bases-loaded balk call on Carpenter in the fourth inning then brought three runs across in the fifth, two in the sixth and capped its scoring with one final run in the seventh.
Senior designated hitter Anthony Synegal and freshman shortstop Ernesto Ortiz each collect two hits for the Bulldogs.
The Zags wrap up play at the Palm Springs Classic with a non-conference matchup against the University of San Francisco 2 p.m. Sunday.
