CLEVELAND, Ohio - Gonzaga University senior women's basketball player Jami Schaefer, formerly Bjorklund, has been selected to the Division I-AAA Scholar-Athlete Team as selected by the I-AAA Athletic Directors Association for the second-straight year.

This is the seventh year the team has been recognized to honor student-athletes playing for schools classified as I-AAA (non-football playing institutions).

Schaefer, a Spokane native and University high graduate, holds a 3.95 GPA in business administration. She was also named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District 8 All-Academic team and the West Coast Conference All-Academic team for the third-straight season.

Schaefer helped the Bulldog to a 27-7 overall record, a 12-2 mark in the West Coast Conference action, their second WCC Tournament title in three years and second appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The guard, who missed nine games during the middle of the season with a PCL tear in her left knee, averaged 5.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.0 assist per game.

Schaefer propelled the Zags to the WCC Tournament title, scoring a season-high 20 points in GU's semifinal victory over Loyola Marymount University. She also hit a crucial 3-pointer in Gonzaga's 74-59 upset over Xavier University to claim its first NCAA Tournament victory in school history.

Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees was required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. She must have reached junior athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have competed at least three academic semesters/five quarters at the nominated institution. Nominated student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the teams' games.

Additionally, from the Scholar-Athlete team, one student-athlete was selected as the Division I-AAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Receiving the honor in 2009 was Jessica Pike, a wellness, health promotion and injury prevention major from Oakland University with a 3.93 GPA.
