Wiegand Becomes Latest Zag To Earn WCC Weekly Award

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's Ryan Wiegand became the latest Bulldog to earn West Coast Conference/Rawlings Player of the Week the conference announced Monday. Wiegand earns the Bulldogs seventh WCC weekly accolade of the season and shares this week's award with Sean Nicol of University of San Diego.

It is the third career WCC weekly accolade and the first of the season for Wiegand who posted multiple hits in all four games last week. The San Diego, Calif. native finished the week 10-for-17 (.588) with six runs scored, 10 RBI, two doubles, one grand slam, a .882 slugging percentage and a .682 on-base percentage. Wiegand opened the week with a grand slam against the University of Arizona and then went 8-for-13 with six RBI in the series sweep at the University of Santa Clara. He capped the weekend with a 4-for-4 four RBI performance and also reached base in all six of his plate appearances in Sunday's series finale.

Wiegand leads the team with 45 RBI and is second on the team with 16 doubles. Earlier this season he became Gonzaga's all-time leader in doubles and RBI and enters this week needing just three hits to become the all-time leader in base hits.

Gonzaga has won at least one WCC weekly award in four straight weeks. Tyson Van Winkle earned Player of the Week last week after Steven Ames earned Pitcher of the Week the week prior and Matt Fields took home Pitcher of the Week Apr. 6.
