SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University senior starting pitcher Matt Fields has been named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week announced by the conference office Monday.
Fields earns his first career WCC weekly accolade and becomes the fourth Bulldog to earn the award this season. The Lake Stevens, Wash. earned his fourth win of the season after holding #26 Pepperdine University to one run on four hits and striking out five in 8.0 innings to earn the win in Gonzaga's 3-1 victory over the Waves in Malibu, Calif. Friday. Fields (4-2) allowed just the four singles and retired 11 Wave hitters in row at point en route to winning his fourth consecutive start.
The 2008 All-WCC honorable mention selection enters his start this Thursday against #21 University of San Diego leading the Zags' starters with a 2.54 ERA and 46.0 innings and is second on the team with 39 strikeouts.
Other Bulldogs to earn WCC accolades this season were sophomore Cody Martin and junior catcher Tyson Van Winkle who took home Co-Pitcher of the Week andPlayer of the Week, respectively, Feb. 23. Junior leftfielder Mark Castellitto was named Co-Player of the Week Mar. 23.
The Bulldogs begin a six-game homestand this week, matching up with the University of Washington 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Noon. Gonzaga then welcomes first place in the WCC and #21 ranked University of San Diego to the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field for a WCC series Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
