Fields and Wiegand Awarded WCC Weekly Accolades

May 4, 2009

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Matt Fields and Ryan Wiegand of Gonzaga University have been named the West Coast Conference/Rawlings Pitcher and Co-Player of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Monday. It is the fifth consecutive week that at least one Bulldog has received a WCC weekly accolade. So far this season the Zags have earned a WCC weekly award nine times, tops in the conference.

Fields picked up his second Pitcher of the Week award of the season after firing his first career complete-game shutout to lead the Bulldogs to a 5-0 win over Saint Mary's College Friday. The Lake Stevens, Wash. native held a potent SMC lineup to just five singles while striking out eight to improve his record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in WCC play. He also enters the week leading the WCC with a 2.72 ERA.

Wiegand is named the Co-Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after going 7-for-13 (.538) with three doubles, six RBI, slugging .769 and becoming Gonzaga's all-time hits leader last week. He recorded at least two hits and two RBI in all three games against SMC over weekend. His third hit of the game Friday gave him the top spot in the school's all-time hits list, passing Eric Rodland's previous top mark of 269. Wiegand's two RBI in Sunday's finale gave him a team-high 51 for the season, the second straight year he has driven in over 50 runs. He shares the weekly accolade with Angelo Songco of Loyola Marymount University.

The Zags do not play this week because of final exams and graduation. Gonzaga returns to action with a two-game series at Oregon State University May 12-13.
