SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University scored four second-half goals and the Bulldogs won the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic with a 4-0 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy Sunday afternoon at Gonzaga Soccer Field.

In the morning opener, Georgia Southern University scored twice in 1:12 of the second half to come from a 2-0 deficit and tie Oregon State University 2-2 in double-overtime.

Gonzaga won the tourney with a 2-0-0 record, OSU took second with a 1-0-1 record, GSU was third at 0-1-1 and UDM finish fourth at 0-2-0.

Defender Nick Barclay of the Bulldogs was named the MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Scott Barnum, who posted two shutouts; forward Tye Perdido who had two goals Sunday and three in the tourney; Ben Funkhouser, who had a goal in Friday's match, and Philippe Garre, who came off the bench for the first two Bulldogs goals Sunday.

Others named to the all-tourney team were keeper Steve Spangler, midfielder forward Danny Mwanga and midfielder/forward Colin Mitchell of OSU; defender Austin Steel, midfielder Danny Hall and forward Jon Cox of GSU, and midfielder Victor Otieno of Detroit.

Gonzaga out-shot Detroit 6-2 in the opening half but couldn't dent keeper Brandon Waterstradt, who made two key saves within a minute of each other mid-way through the half. The first came in the 22nd minute when Joel Schilperoort got his foot on a ball while under heavy pressure from a UDM defender and Waterstradt got his hand on the ball while diving to his right. Less than a minute later Stefan Eysteinsson had a point-blank shot after taking a Perdido cross, and Waterstradt knocked the ball down and it was cleared for a corner kick.

The second half was all Bulldogs as Garre, who entered the match in the 31st minute, found his shooting touch in the second half. His first goal came at 47:32, taking a thru ball from Nick Love, getting an initial bump from a defender and then getting free for a low shot to the left that Waterstradt couldn't get to in time. Seven minute later it was Garre again, James Partee launching a long pass from midfield to Garre on the right wing who dribbled into the 18 and shot to the far post from 16 yards for the first two-goal match of his career. It was the first career Gonzaga point for Partee, who redshirted last season.

The Bulldogs all but put the match away at 72:56 when Perdido scored his second goal of the season, taking a right cross from Love and going in uncontested on the right side for the open net goal from the top of the 6.

Perdido put the icing on the cake at 80:59 when Mitchell Weller sent a pass from 40 yards to the middle of the field inside the 18 and Perdido buried the shot for the second two-goal match of his career.

Barclay almost put the capper on his MVP performance in the 89th minute when his free kick from 25 yards forced Waterstradt to make a diving save to his right, the rebound headed out of a bounds.

Barnum, who recorded his second straight shutout, was called on for just one save in the match as many of the Titans' shots were from long range and wide of the goal. He has allowed just four goals in Gonzaga's six matches - no more than one in any match - and has a GAA of 0.64.

"Today felt like a win," Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "We had possession today. Philippe came off the bench and played well. He had six shots, four on goal and two goals. Our defense was also strong, led by Nick who played well both days."

Gonzaga held a 16-8 advantage in shots, 12 of them on goal as Waterstradt was called on for eight saves.

In the opener, the Beavers had to play a man down for 82 minutes when the Beavers Chris Miller was red carded for pulling down Rich Heyer by his jersey from behind just outside the 18. Despite playing a man down, OSU took a -0 lead when Mitchell scored his fourth goal of the year and second of the tournament at 28:36, taking a long pass from the opposite side of mid-field, breaking away and scoring from 10 yards to beat GSU keeper Mike Gubosh, who was making his first start of the season. Eagles' starting keeper Joey Ralph was injured early in Friday's match and gave way to Gubosh. Ralph was still in a leg brace Sunday and further examination of his knee, which popped in and out in Friday's match, is scheduled for Monday.

Mwanga scored his fourth goal of the season and second of the tournament at 66:03 to seemingly give the Beavers an insurmountable 2-0 lead. Mwanga scored on a free kick from 22 yards, looping the kick over the wall and having it knuckleball into the lower right side of the net.

But the Eagles rallied. Hall scored his first goal on a penalty kick at 78:38 to cut the deficit to one, and Cox got the equalizer at 79:50 when his one-timer from 16 yards beat Spangler to his right. Joe Madigan sent the cross to David Leonard who sent the pass to Hall.

GSU's Cox tested Spangler in the 85th minute with a hard, chest-high shot from 10 yards on the left side, and Mwanga missed an open net from 8 yards in the 109th that would have given the Beavers the victory.

GSU held a 15-12 shots advantage, but OSU had a 4-2 edge in the OT. GSU had six shots on goal, OSU four.

The tournament was the final home appearance for the Bulldogs until Oct. 9 when they make their West Coast Conference home debut against Loyola Marymount University. The Bulldogs continue tournament play this weekend in Albuquerque, NM, when they participate in the Nike/TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational. Gonzaga will play Binghamton University of New York Friday and host University of New Mexico Sunday.
