PULLMAN, Wash. - Junior Sage Suffecool is third just two strokes out of the lead and freshman Victoria Fallgren in ninth seven shots back after 36 holes of the Northwest Dodge Dealers Inland Cup hosted by Washington State University at Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

Suffecool shot a 1-over par 73 on the 6,126-yard, par 72 layout and stands at 147, two shots by leader Kayla Mortellaro and one behind runner-up Amanda Jacobs, both from the University of Idaho. Mortellaro overtook her teammate for the second-round lead with a 1-under 71 and is at 145 while Jacobs shot a 74 and is at 146.

"Sage is playing great. The highlight of her day was when she holed the par 5 18th from about 100 yards for an eagle 3. The whole team was watching and it was pretty exciting," head coach Brad Rickel said.

Fallgren, who posted her second straight 76, is at 152, seven shots behind entering Wednesday's final round.

"Victoria just isn't making any putts," Rickel said. "I think she's had 34 putts both days."

The format of this tournament is three 18-hole rounds rather than the more traditional 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs moved up one spot in the team chase but still lost ground to Idaho in the standings. Idaho shot a 292 and leads at 601 while the Bulldogs shot 309 and are in fourth place at 621. The University of Nevada and Sacramento State University are tied for second at 613. Gonzaga holds a 3-shot edge over the host Cougars and a 9-shot lead over Oregon State University, a pair of Pacific-10 Conference schools.

"It would be nice to beat them (WSU and OSU)," Rickel said. "I don't think Gonzaga has ever defeated a Pac-10 school. We're hanging with the field but we still feel we're leaving some shots out there. Idaho played well today. They know the course better than we do and played it better than we did today."

Rickel said freshman Genna Dodge played well but had one bad hole, giving her a second straight 80. Jessica Howe shot 81 and Rachel Sibbitt had an 80.

"I think Genna is on the verge of shooting a low score," Rickel said. "Jessica and Rachel are working hard and I think they could come out and shoot a good score tomorrow."

Although scores were generally lower Tuesday, Rickel said the wind was more a factor at the 8 a.m. start than it was Monday, guessing the wind was 10 mph stronger on Tuesday. As a result, he said the greens are hard and firm so balls are not sticking on the greens.

The final round tees off at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
