LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Boise State University in its second and final match at the Uni Wyo Cowgirl Classic Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-4-0) had numerous offensive threats turned away throughout the afternoon, forcing Boise State (5-3-4) keeper Liz Ruiz to make seven saves. GU finished with a 13-11 shot advantage but BSU posted an 8-7 shot difference in the second half before using a second half score to put an end to GU's three-match winning streak.
Both teams traded shots throughout the first half with Bulldogs best chance coming on Lori Conrad's shot from 10 yards out that was turned away by the Bronco defense. In the final seconds of the half the Zags made two late rushes to the net as Ashley Riley's shot was blocked and Casey Gould's last second shot sailed just wide to send the teams into the break tied at 0-0.
The second half started with Conrad and Katie Spangenberg each firing shots for the Bulldogs but had both attempts corralled by the BSU keeper. At the 63:16 mark Boise State scored the eventual match-winner on a rebound opportunity that Cat Leewaye gathered in and kicked past GU keeper Amy Danielson for the matche's lone goal.
The Bronco defense went on to hold strong the rest of the match, turning away one last shot by Catherine Cullen in the final minute to hand the Zags the 1-0 defeat.
"I am disappointed with the loss today as we had our chances to win but let this one get away," commented head coach Amy Edwards. "We learned today that you can never be satisfied and must always compete for 90 minutes."
Gonzaga had Emma Dolcetti, Elle Sweeney and Danielson all named to the All-Tournament team after the Zags posted a 1-1-0 record over the weekend. Danielson finished the match with three saves while Conrad and Cullen paced the Zags with three shots apiece.
The Bulldogs continue their seven match road stretch with a trip to Seattle to face the University of Washington 5 p.m. Friday and also to Portland, Ore. to match up against Portland State University 1 p.m. next Sunday.
