SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 defeat in its West Coast Conference opener against nationally-ranked University of Portland Sunday on Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Gonzaga Soccer Field.
The Bulldogs were attired in pink jerseys to commemorate the fight against cancer.
Micaela Capelle scored two goals while Ellen Parker and Amanda Frisbie each scored one for the Pilots.
Gonzaga saw its overall record fall to 5-8-1 while the Pilots, ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA-Hendrickcars.com and No. 4 in the Soccer America rankings, improved to 13-1-0.
Capelle scored the first two goals at 9:16 and 33:44. Her first goal came off a shot from the deep left wing outside the 18 which hit the right post and deflected into the goal. Capelle scored the second goal off a deflection by Bulldogs redshirt goalkeeper Lauren Ames.
The Pilots continued to put a lot of pressure on the Bulldogs offensively in the second half, adding the final two goals. Parker and Frisbie scored unassisted goals at 66:41 and 75:24, respectively.
Although the Pilots held a 18-9 shot advantage, they pressured the Bulldogs to take a majority of their shots outside the penalty box. The Bulldogs best scoring chance was in the first half when freshman Cassie Geerdts' header off a corner kick was saved by Pilots goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung.
Ames had nine saves for the Bulldogs, DeYoung and substitute Erin Dees each had one for the Pilots. The Pilots coaching staff decided to change goalkeepers following Frisbie's goal.
Despite the loss, Bulldogs head coach Amy Edwards was pleased with the team's performance, including the leadership from captains Sheridan Jones, Catherine Cullen and Elle Sweeney.
"We did get better today," Edwards said. "This is such a quality team that when you make a mistake, they become efficient and will punish you. But we are getting better which is good to see heading into next week."
The Bulldogs return to action Friday against Pepperdine University at 12:30 p.m. Following the match, the men's soccer team will take on the University of San Francisco at 3 p.m.
