SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman forward Cassie Geerdts overtime goal helped the Gonzaga University women's soccer team complete the come-from-behind 2-1 overtime win over nearby rival Eastern Washington University Sunday afternoon at Gonzaga Soccer Field.
Sophomore defender Morgan Manchester's throw-in went directly to the penalty area where Geerdts' shot went over Eagles' goalkeeper Jamie Walker and into the goal at 98:37 for her second career and match-winning goal. It was also the second assist of the season for Manchester, who recorded her first off a throw-in against Portland State on Sept. 26.
Bulldogs head coach Amy Edwards felt very calm with the Bulldogs playing in overtime.
"The look on their faces going into overtime was extremely confident," Edwards said. "That was really calming for me to see that look on their faces. They were determined to win this game today. It was a hard game to win."
The Eagles (0-9-1) scored the first goal of the match at 2:09. Brittany Starks' shot near the top of the penalty area rolled past Bulldogs goalkeeper Lauren Ames to the right goal post. Ames left the match following the goal due to an injury after diving to make the save near the right post. She passed the goalkeeper duty to freshman Kailey Kiefus, who made three saves in her collegiate debut.
"Kailey had to hop into her first college game and she did a tremendous job," Edwards said. "She was very composed and made some good saves."
Sophomore forward Emily Hutchins scored the equalizer at 29:29 inside the penalty area off a pass by redshirt junior defender Elle Sweeney. The goal was Hutchins first of the season.
Rain started falling after the 70th minute and did not stop for the rest of the match.
"The rain did make the field a bit slick so it was difficult to keep the ball at times," Edwards said.
The Bulldogs took a season-high 32 shots, besting the previous of 28 against the University of Nevada. The win concludes the Bulldogs non-conference slate. They will play the remaining seven matches in West Coast Conference play, starting Sunday at home against defending champion and fourth-ranked University of Portland at 1 p.m.
"We just gained a lot of confidence in ourselves as a team with this win going into the conference season," Edwards said. "It's like a new season for us so anything can happen."
