LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount University scored twice in 1:14 late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Gonzaga University 3-1 in a West Coast Conference men's soccer match Friday.
The Bulldogs (3-7-0, 0-3-0) lost their third straight match, all in WCC play. LMU (7-4-1; 3-0-0) was picked to win the WCC in the preseason poll of coaches and remained undefeated in three conference outings.
LMU grabbed an early lead when Fernando Barba scored his first goal of the season and his first of two in the match with a left-footed shot from 18 yards.
Gonzaga got the equalizer early in the second half when Zach Smith scored his second goal of the season, taking a pass from Stefan Eysteinsson and bouncing a shot off the upper right post and into the net.
Smith had three of Gonzaga's four second-half shots, one of them a header in the 62nd minute that was saved by LMU keeper Jack McCormack for one of his three saves in the match. Had the shot gone either left or right it might have been a goal, but the header was pretty much a straight shot at McCormack.
The Lions regained the lead at 71:10 when Artu Jozkowicz punched a header past Gonzaga keeper Ryan Caballero for his fifth goal of the year. Barba got the insurance tally at 72:24 when he side-stepped a Bulldog defender and shot to the lower right corner.
The Lions held a 19-11 edge in shots, including 11-4 in the second half. LMU had nine shots on goal as Caballero was called on for six saves.
Gonzaga will remain in southern California Sunday to face the University of San Diego at 2 p.m.
