PEORIA, Ariz. - Gonzaga University dropped a 9-5 decision to the University of Kansas in the second day for the Peoria College Showdown Tournament in Peoria, Ariz. Saturday.
Andy Hunter led the way for the Zags (2-3) with three hits, four RBI and his third home run in as many games while Drew Heid added two hits and also scored twice.
For the second consecutive day, Hunter gave Gonzaga an early 1-0 lead with a solo blast in the first inning. An inning later though, Kansas (3-1) evened things up with a two-out RBI base hit. The Bulldogs answered right back in the third inning as Heid doubled down the left field line to start the inning and after moving up to third on a ground out, was able to come across on Hunter's sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 2-1 GU lead.
The Jayhawks again answered an inning later, putting up five runs in the fourth inning off of Gonzaga starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter. Kansas built a 6-2 lead on three hits, one walk, two hit-by-pitches, one wild pitch and one Bulldog error in the inning.
Kansas later added three more runs in the sixth inning but Gonzaga tried to make a later run at a comeback, pushing three runs across in the ninth to make it a 9-5 game. Hunter capped his day with a two-run single in the final frame.
Carpenter (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven earned runs on six hits, striking out five and walking five over 5.1 innings. Liam Baron recorded four strikeouts while firing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Zags.
The Bulldogs wrap up play in Peoria Sunday with a 9 a.m. (PST) matchup against Kansas before turning around and playing Sacramento State University at 1 p.m. (PST).
