TUCSON, Ariz. - The wind and Gonzaga University's scores both went down Saturday during the final round of the Mountain View Collegiate women's golf tournament, the Bulldogs improving seven spots to tie the University of Michigan for ninth at 914.
With winds gusting to 25 mph during Friday's opening 36 holes, the Bulldogs found themselves in 16th place but only five shots out of the top 10 heading into the final round. And the Bulldogs responded with a tournament-best 297 after opening rounds of 312 and 305.
Victoria Fallgren and Jessica Howe led the comeback with 73's Saturday, Fallgren finishing at 224 for a tie for 14th after shooting 78-73 Friday. Howe recovered from 80-77 Friday rounds to finish at 230 and tied for 40th.
Stephanie Corey was the most consistent Bulldog, posting a final-round 75 after a pair of 77's Friday to finish at 229 over the 6,227-yard, par 72 Mountain View Golf Course layout, good for 39th.
"We had a good day today, a real good day," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. "Obviously didn't have a good first round, but today was a great day and we outplayed a lot of the field. We didn't get off to the start we wanted yesterday, but we definitely got better."
Colorado State University claimed the team title after a scorecard playoff over Texas Tech University, the teams knotting at 890. The fifth player totals for the two teams were also tied, so the playoff was broken by comparing the fourth player total scores which game CSU the title.
There was also a tie for medalist honors between Gabriella Dominguez of Texas Tech and Julia Potter of the University of Missouri, the two deadlocked at 219. The tie could not be broken after a comparison of scorecards, so co-medalist honors were awarded.
The Bulldogs will return to action April 5-6 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., the final tune-up for the Zags prior to the West Coast Conference Championship April 19-20 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo, Calif.
