SAN JOSE, Calif. - Gonzaga University's women's golf team didn't battle the elements or a tough field well during the opening 36 holes of the Juli Inskter Spartan Invitational Monday.

A day of rain, wind, sun and hail pushed scores upward as the top three teams on the leaderboard - all nationally ranked - posted scores not indicative of national caliber golf.

The Bulldogs had rounds of 320-323 for 623 and last in the 16-team field that is loaded with nationally-ranked foes. Host San Jose State University, ranked 36th, leads at 19-over par 595 for a 6-shot lead over 26th ranked UC Davis at 601 and a 7-shot lead over 14th-ranked University of California.

The best individual round of the day for the Bulldogs was turned in by Victoria Fallgren with an opening-round 75 over the 6,223-yard Almaden Golf and Country Club that is at par 72. Only Stephanie Corey with an opening-round 78 and Sage Suffecool with a second-round 79 were able to break 80 for the Bulldogs. Fallgren is tied for 44th at 157 after a second-round 82.

Cristina Corpus of the host Spartans is atop the leader board at 143 after rounds of 72-71 for a 1-stroke lead over Caroline Hedwall (69-75) of 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State University and Louisa Lies (73-71) of Fresno State University.

Other ranked teams in the field include No. 38 UC Irvine and No. 44 University of San Francisco.

The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes Tuesday.
