VALLEJO, Calif. - A windy day and a tough Hiddenbrooke Golf Club layout made scores soar Monday during the first two rounds of the West Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship.
Eight-time defending champion Pepperdine University did the best job of taming the course under trying conditions, shooting an even 600 for 36 holes for a 27-stroke lead over the University of San Francisco, the two schools figured by most to battle for the team title.
The Bulldogs are third at 646 with rounds of 331-315 for a 7-stroke lead over Santa Clara University which shot 653 for fourth. The University of Portland is last at 670 as only five WCC schools sponsor women's golf.
Sage Suffecool paced the Bulldogs with rounds of 79-77 for 156 and sixth place heading into Tuesday's final round. Suffecool is five strokes out of a tie for fourth. Rachel Sibbitt is tied for 12th at 163 after rounds of 87-76 and Victoria Fallgren is tied for 13th with rounds of 81-83 for 164. Stephanie Corey shot 166 (84-82) and is tied for 18th and Jessica Howe is tied for 22nd at 170 (90-80).
Danielle Cvitanov of USF is the individual leader at 148 with rounds of 75-73 over the 5,949-yard layout that is playing to par 72. She has a 1-stroke lead over Pepperdine teammates Kaitlin Drolson and Danielle Kang.
"It was a tough day," Rickel said. "The weather and tough pin placements really made the course tough for everyone. We played much better in the afternoon and we'll need our best round tomorrow. Sage was our best player all day."
