VALLEJO, Calif. - Gonzaga University head women's golf coach Brad Rickel wasn't going to use the weather as an excuse for his team's play on the final day of the West Coast Conference Championship at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.
The Bulldogs, in third place and seven strokes ahead of fourth place Santa Clara University heading into the final round, shot a final-round 335 and finished fourth at 981, nine strokes behind the Broncos who shot a final-round 319 to finish at 972.
Pepperdine University won its ninth straight title at 906, well ahead of runner-up University of San Francisco at 938. The University of Portland was fifth at 995. Only five teams sponsor women's golf in the WCC.
A wet and windy day greeted the players Tuesday after a windy, but dry, Monday contributed to escalated scores.
Sophomore Stephanie Corey was the only Bulldog able to tame the weather a little bit Tuesday, shooting a final-round 78 to finish at 244 and a tie for 13th. She recovered from Monday's rounds of 84-82 to shoot just one of three sub-80 rounds for the Bulldogs in the tournament.
But junior Sage Suffecool shot an 89 after Monday's 79-77 and finished at 245, falling from sixth after 36 holes to a tie for 14th. Freshman Victoria Fallgren had an 82 Tuesday for a 246 and a tie for 16th, Rachel Sibbitt shot 86 for a 249 to finish 19th and sophomore Jessica Howe had an 89 for a 259 to finish 24th.
"I am disappointed in our effort," Rickel said. "I really think we were the third best team in the tournament, but with our effort today we deserved our fourth place finish. We had to use an 86 and an 89 from experienced players today and we can't overcome those kinds of scores."
The top four individual scores in each round are used to compute the team score.
But despite his disappointment, Rickel did point to next year with his young team which had no seniors playing in the WCC Championship.
"The future is bright, but a day like today is hard to take," he said.
Pepperdine golfers took the top three spots, overtaking first-day leader Danielle Cvitanov of USF who shot a final-round 81 and slipped to fourth. Lisa McCloskey of the Waves shot 77-74-74 for 225 and a 2-stroke victory over teammate Danielle Kang who shot 74-75-78. Jessica Wallace was third at 228 with rounds of 78-73-77 over the par 72 layout which played to 5,949-yards Monday and 5,978 yards Tuesday.
