SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's Mark Castellitto, Drew Heid, Clayton Eslick and Steven Halcomb each garnered 2010 All-West Coast Conference honors the conference announced Thursday. Heid and Castellitto earned spots on the All-WCC team while Eslick and Halcomb were placed on the All-Freshmen team.
Heid was a unanimous All-WCC selection by all of the WCC coaches, earning his second career All-WCC honor after posting team highs in batting average (.390), hits (92), doubles (18), triples (4), stolen bases (8), slugging (.602), on-base percentage (.467), runs scored (54) and a .376 batting average in WCC play. His 92 hits led the WCC and also set a Gonzaga single-season record, passing Larry Patterson's previous record of 91 set in 1977. The Zags lead-off man and centerfielder in all 56 games this season led the team with 31 multi-hit games and recorded hits in 20 of the 21 WCC contests. The Touchee, Wash. native also finished second on the team with a career-high eight homers and produced three different hitting streaks of 10-games or more including a team-best 19-game streak. In his first season at Gonzaga after spending one season at Walla Walla Community College, Heid earned All-WCC honors back in 2007. In just three seasons with the Zag, Heid leaves; with 234 career hits, good for fifth on Gonzaga's all-time hits list; tied for third on the school's career triples list with 13 and sixth on Gonzaga's top-10 career batting average list with a .376 career average.
Castellitto picks up his first career All-WCC honor after leading the Zags and finishing among the conference leaders with career-highs of a .335 batting average, 11 home runs and 50 RBI. He also finished second on the team after posting career-bests in hits (73), doubles (17), slugging (.573) and on-base percentage (.418). The Poway, Calif. native led the Bulldogs with 12 multi-RBI games and started all 56 games in left field. In the Zags 21 WCC contests, he led the team with 17 RBI and finished second on the club with 20 runs scored and a .337 batting average. Castellitto led the Zags in homers in each of the past three seasons and leaves Gonzaga tied for seventh on the school's all-time career home runs list with 29 and tied for 10th in career at-bats with 685.
Eslick and Halcomb become Gonzaga's first pair of freshmen to earn All-Freshmen team honors in the same season and the first Zags to earn the accolade since Cody Martin earned the honor in 2008.
Eslick earns his first career All-WCC award after producing one of the best freshman campaigns in school history. The left-handed hitting second baseman that started 53 games this season finished second on the team with 17 doubles and third on the club with 37 RBI. He recorded seven doubles and drove in 15 RBI during WCC play. Eslick finished with one home run that came on a pinch-hit grand slam in the Zags 11-1 win over the University of Washington Apr. 27.
Halcomb picks up his first career All-WCC accolade after the infielder appeared in 33 games this season and finished the season as the Zags everyday third baseman. He made move into a starting role prior to the start of the WCC play and didn't disappoint. The right-handed hitter made his presence known in conference play, posting a.306 batting average, recording four doubles, one homer, 10 RBI and 14 runs scored while starting all 21 WCC contests.
