MISSOULA, Mont. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the University of Nevada in the inaugural match between the two schools Friday at the University of Montana Tournament in Missoula, Mont.
Friday's result was the Bulldog's (1-1-1) first draw since Nov. 8, 2008 when they played Santa Clara University to a scoreless draw. The Wolf Pack (0-1-1) struck first in the 18th minute.
Aleina Dominguez's shot hit the cross bar and deflected off redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Ames.
Five minutes later, senior forward Ashley Riley scored the match-tying goal after a successful pass from junior forward Sarah Rhodes and senior midfielder Sheridan Jones forced a one-on-one matchup between Riley and Nevada goalkeeper Dana Moreno from eight yards out.
Gonzaga put pressure on the Nevada defense throughout the second half, outshooting Nevada 10-1. The Bulldogs continued to knock on the Wolf Pack's door in overtime, outshooting the Pack 10-2. Overall, the Bulldogs held a 28-9 advantage in shots.
Riley, Rhodes and freshman midfielder Emily Eckmann each had five shots while senior midfielder Catherine Cullen tallied four.
"Obviously I was happy with the quantity of shots we had today but not excited about only getting nine out of 28 shots on goal," stated head coach Amy Edwards said. "We certainly had numerous chances to win the game today.
"Our defenders did a great job after halftime, limiting Nevada to only three shots the remaining 65 minutes of the game. The defenders presence gave us numerous attacking opportunities."
The Bulldogs conclude the tournament and the season-opening four-match road trip Sunday against the host Montana. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. PDT. The Grizzlies faced Iowa State University following the Gonzaga-Nevada match.
