GRAND FOLKS, N.D. - It was a bumpy start to the Gonzaga University women's volleyball season as the Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision to Drake University in the opening match of the North Dakota Classic, hosted by the University of North Dakota, Friday morning. The Zags fell to the also-nicknamed Bulldogs 18-25, 16-25, 18-25.
Gonzaga was led in the loss by sophomore outside hitter Terran Poindexter with nine kills, along with seven digs. Newcomers Schylur Edelman, a senior transfer from the University of Colorado, and Kristina Lavrisha, a freshman from Denver, Colo., each added six kills apiece. Lavrisha, not showing any nerves in playing her first collegiate match, also made 13 digs and had one service ace in the setback. Senior libero Allyson Powell had a team-high 16 digs for the Zags.
Gonzaga was beset by 31 attack errors, two off its total kills amount (33), in the match and was able to hit just .015 as a squad.
Drake's Angela Bys had a game-high 10 kills and hit .296 to lead the Bulldogs to the sweep. Caitlin Johnson passed out 20 assists as Drake's offense finished the match with a .259 hitting clip. Michelle Reidy chipped in eight kills and a .353 attack percentage. She also led all players with six blocks.
Drake finished the match with a huge 16-4 blocking advantage and held the slight 57-56 edge in digs.
Gonzaga looks to rebound when it plays North Dakota, 3-0 winners over San Jose State University in its opening match, tonight at 5 p.m.
