SPOKANE, Wash. - A goal by the University of Denver's Kristen Hamilton at 87:05 broke a 1-1 tie as the Pioneers defeated Gonzaga University 2-1 Sunday on the final day of the Gonzaga Tournament. Gonzaga will announce its all-tournament team Monday.
Against a participant of last year's NCAA Tournament, the Bulldogs (3-4-1) fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Kelsey Quinn at 33:29. But the Zags answered back at 57:00. Following a corner kick, junior defender Ashley Railey knocked the loose ball into the goal from the box and tied the match 1-1.
Redshirt goalkeeper Lauren Ames once again made a strong performance. While trialing 1-0, Hamilton snuck by the Gonzaga defenders in the goal box and shot was blocked by Ames. Ames also stopped a cross with one hand to prevent the Pioneers from scoring the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute.
Hamilton, who had four shots, beat Ames to score the match winner. After receiving a forward pass by Bria Beardsley, Hamilton took a shot from 25 yards to find the left side of the goal.
But the Bulldogs had several opportunities to tie - or even win - the match. One notable was Riley's shot outside the six that was caught by Pioneers keeper Lara Campbell.
"I felt we came out in the second half with a more energy than in the first," Bulldogs head coach Amy Edwards said. "That certainly helped us with making it 1-1. The thing for us today was putting together two quality games this weekend but we came up short.
"I'm very happy with our team's competitiveness both Friday and Sunday. The leadership of Sheridan [Jones] and Elle has really stepped up and provided some great leadership this weekend. Lauren also stepped up and had a good weekend. The one-hand save she made in the second half was critical for us to stay in the game. Her confidence and stability in the back was critical for staying in this game."
Earlier in the day, the University of Colorado defeated Washington State University 2-1. Kassidy Fitzpatrick scored the match-winning goal 57 seconds into the first overtime, shooting to the left side of the goal following a corner kick by Kate Russell, who also assisted Hayley Hughes goal at 40:44. Following Hughes' goal, Washington State's Micaela Castain tied the match at 41:32.
The Bulldogs travel to the Moscow Friday to take on the University of Idaho at 4 p.m.
