Bulldogs Fall 2-0 To Redhawks

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team was defeated by Seattle University 2-0 Sunday at Championship Field, the second loss of the weekend for the Zags. (2-3-1).
Seattle (4-2-0) got on the board two minutes into the match. Emma Levy headed a ball to prevent Zags redshirt goalkeeper Lauren Ames from catching the ball. As the ball rolled to the left side of the goal, Kara Kuttler received the ball rolled it into the net.
The Redhawks extended their lead to 2-0 in the sixth minute, Kuttler's corner kick on the left side reached the other end of the field for Emma Levy to head the ball, which deflected off the right goal post.
In the 10th minute, sophomore forward Kelsey Werre dribbled to the right side of the goal, her cross found freshman forward Cassie Geerdts in the middle of the goal but Geerdts was denied by the Redhawks defense. Senior forward Sheridan Jones attempted to score in the 12th but her shot from 25 yards out went wide right.
The Gonzaga defense, led by redshirt junior Elle Sweeney and sophomore Morgan Manchester, held the Redhawks offense down in the second half. Sweeney knocked the ball away from Seattle's Taylor Bolibol in the middle of the penalty box.
"I thought our defenders played very well in the second half," said Bulldogs head coach Amy Edwards. "They did what we asked to put us in an opportunity to win the game."
The Bulldogs offense started knocking on the door in the 62nd minute. Junior forward Sarah Rhodes attempted to head the ball into the goal from the middle but the shot went wide left. Several seconds later Rhodes took a shot just outside the center of the goal box but her shot went wide left.
"I thought we started playing with a little bit more intensity in the second half but still we're not very clean on the attack yet," Edwards said.
Werre attempted to score in the 72nd minute in the penalty box but her shot was saved by Seattle goalkeeper Madison Goverde.
The Bulldogs return to Gonzaga Soccer Field for the Gonzaga Tournament Friday and Sunday. The Bulldogs face the University of Colorado Friday at 4 p.m., while University of Denver meets Washington State University at 1 p.m.
