Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's basketball senior Kayla Standish recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Bulldogs to a 70-54 victory over visiting University of Montana Sunday afternoon at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Standish, whose 13 rebounds consisted of 10 offensive boards, also blocked four shots, dished out three assists and made one steal to propel the Zags to 7-2 on the year.
"Kayla didn't shoot the ball overly well tonight and sometimes you have to go to the glass and that's what she did today and I am really proud of her for that," stated head coach Kelly Graves. "I don't know if I ever have seen a player have 10 offensive boards; she did a great job."
Standish closed out the game shooting just 4-of-12 from the field but allowed Gonzaga to score 11 points off her 10 offensive rebounds.
Two other Zags cracked double-digits points in the 16-point win; redshirt sophomore Haiden Palmer came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points and junior Meghan Winters saw 15 minutes off the bench for GU and tallied a season-high 11 points as she drained 3-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc and hit two free throws.
Gonzaga quickly ran out to a 10-3 advantage and pushed it to a 22-9 lead at 8:39 on the sharpshooting of Palmer. The guard was nearly a one-man show as she scored seven of the Zags 10 points in their 10-0 run that turned a slight 12-9 edge into the 13-point lead. Winters capped off the run with the first of her three 3-pointers on the day.
Winters second 3-pointer came two minutes later and gave Gonzaga its largest lead of the first half at 28-12.
"When Meghan came in a hit a couple of those 3-pointers, especially her first one, I felt a lot better about the game," explained Graves. "It was great to see her knock those down."
Montana (4-6) was able to slice Gonzaga lead to single-digits at halftime. The Griz hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final four minutes and added a jumper by Katie Baker to put the Zags lead at 35-24.
A 13-6 run by the Bulldogs over the opening five minutes of the final half had Gonzaga's lead back to 16 points at 47-31. Senior Katelan Redmon started the scoring off for the Zags with a 3-pointer while Standish closed out the run with an old fashion 3-point play.
Montana mounted a pretty impressive 9-0 run to cut Gonzaga's lead to seven at 47-40 with 13:19 to play but a jumper by Redmon followed by Winters third 3-pointer put the Bulldogs lead back above double-digits for good.
Twelve Zags saw action in the victory, with eight players scoring.
Gonzaga's bench accounted for 31 points and as a team it shot 38.8 percent (26-of-17) from the field.
Montana was led by Kenzie De Boer with 17 points and six steals.
The Bulldogs now focus on first semester finals before hosting UC Riverside Saturday, Dec. 17 a 6 p.m.
"The next four days are the most important days of the year for our student-athletes," explained Graves. "Finals week is never easy but I am happy we are heading into it at 7-2."
