Bulldogs Defeat Dayton To Win Holiday Hoops Classic

Box Score

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team won the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic with an 82-76 victory over the University of Dayton Wednesday at South Point Arena. The Bulldogs, who finished the classic with a 2-0 record after beating the University of Georgia 71-68 Monday, improved their overall mark to 10-2 on the year.

Redshirt sophomore Haiden Palmer was named the Most Valuable Player, while senior Katelan Redmon earned All-Tournament honors.

Redmon led the way for Gonzaga against Dayton, finishing with a team-high 20 points. Palmer, who had 22 points against Georgia, including the winning 3-pointer, added 11 points. All five starters reached double-figures as senior Kelly Bowen and junior Taelor Karr chipped in 14 a piece and senior Kayla Standish added 13.

It was a close first half as neither team ever got more than a four point lead on the other. Unfortunately for Gonzaga, it played most of the first half with Standish and K. Redmon on the bench as each were hit with two early fouls. Standish played just seven minutes, contributing two points, while K. Redmon had six points - a perfect 2-of-2 from the floor and 2-of-2 at the charity stripe, before she had to sit with 10 minutes left in the half.

Despite the Bulldogs two big players on the bench, Gonzaga flourished. It used a late 9-2 run to turn a two point deficit at 29-27 into a 3-point advantage at 34-31 with 3:53 to play in the first. Senior Kelly Bowen started the run with a layup and followed that up with a jumper as the shot clock sounded, while sophomore Meghan Winters came off the bench to nail a 3-pointer. Sophomore guard Jazmine Redmon capped off the run with a baseline jumper.

It was Bowen that gave Gonzaga the 40-36 advantage as she again hit a jumper with 24 seconds left.

Gonzaga had eight players contribute points in the first half with Palmer leading the way with nine. The Bulldogs finished the half shooting 40.5 percent (15-of-37) from the floor and were credited with 11 assists. They also held the 26-19 rebounding advantage.

Justine Raterman led Dayton with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes.

A 13-6 run by Gonzaga to being the second half had the Bulldogs holding the 53-42 edge at 15:21. Bowen had six points in the opening spurt, while Karr drained a crucial 3-pointer.

The Bulldogs largest lead of the second half was 12-points at 57-45 with 14:05 play after Standish made a hard layup.

The Flyers did not go away though, and used a 7-1 run to slash the Bulldogs advantage to 58-52 and went on to get within three points of the lead at 70-67 with 2:17 to play.

K. Redmon was huge though, hitting back-to-back jumpers for Gonzaga, including one after she got an offensive board to put Gonzaga up six with 1:25 to play. The Bulldog then lived at the line, sinking 8-of-8 the charity strip in the final 39 seconds to secure the six-point victory. Karr hit 4-of-4, while K. Redmon and Standish both nailed two.

Gonzaga finished the game shooting 40.8-percent (29-of-71) from the field and was 77.8 percent (21-of-27) at the charity stripe. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Flyers 48-40.

Dayton (6-4) was led by Raterman with 25 points.

The Bulldogs open West Coast Conference action next as it plays at the University of Portland, Dec. 29. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
