Women's Basketball Falls To USC 58-51

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of Southern California used a 13-2 run over the last 5:20 of the game to hand the No. 24 Gonzaga University women's basketball team its second loss of the season as it defeated the Bulldogs 58-51 Sunday at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The seven-point loss was only the Zags second setback in the McCarthey Athletic Center in 32 games, spanning into three seasons.

"You got to give USC credit because they are a little longer, more athletic and they challenged us a little bit better," explained head coach Kelly Graves after the contest. "But the reality is if Kayla [Standish] and Katelan [Redmon] are going to combine 6-for-26, you're not going to beat a good team. And that's was the bottom line today."

Standish and Redmon, the Bulldogs' top two scorers coming into the game at 19.5 and 12.5 points per game, respectively, combined for 15 points and were 6-of-26 from the field and just 3-of-9 in the second half.

It was Standish though that broke the fifth tie of the game late in the second half and started a 5-0 run that gave Gonzaga a four point lead at 49-45 with 5:20 remaining. She knotted the contest at 45-45 when she hit one-of-two free throws and then gave GU the lead as she grabbed an offensive board and scored the put back at 5:38. Sophomore Jazmine Redmon stole the ball from the Trojan's Jacki Germeloson on the next play and scored the fast-break layup to put the Bulldogs up by four and forced USC head coach Michael Cooper to call a timeout.

Things didn't go according to plan when Gonzaga came out of the timeout as USC scored the next 13 points to put the dagger in the Zags with its 58-49 lead with 26 seconds left. The Bulldogs missed five shots and turned the ball over three times during the Trojans crucial run. USC itself hit 5-of-7, including an important 3-pointer by Ashley Corral to turn a four-point and two possession lead into a seven-point edge with 2:06 remaining.

Gonzaga finally scored with nine ticks remaining on two free throws by Standish but it was too little too late as the Bulldogs fell to 5-2 on the year and produced its lowest scoring output since Dec. 12, 2009 when they scored 49 points in a 70-49 loss to Baylor University.

"Simply put, you have to execute and I don't think we executed very well, especially late in the game," stated Graves.

The Bulldogs did go into halftime with the slight 24-22 advantage despite shooting 30.6 percent from the field (11-of-36). Senior Kelly Bowen and redshirt sophomore Haiden Palmer carried most of the weight in the opening 20 minutes, scoring nine and seven points, respectively.

For the game, Bowen and Standish led the way as each recorded double-doubles. Bowen finished with a game-high 15 points and added a season-high 10 boards. Standish had 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

Gonzaga won the battle of the boards 43-37, which included a 17-8 edge on the offensive end but only have five assists in the game.

USC, who improved to 4-3 on the year, was led by Corral with 19 points. Briana Gilbreath added 13 points and Jacki Gemelos brought down a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Bulldogs look to rebound when it hosts Eastern Washington University Friday, Dec. 9. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
