YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Gonzaga University's women's golf team slipped to sixth place overall and Jessica Howe finished tied for 10th following Tuesday's final round of The Gold Rush by Goldsmith at Yorba Linda Country Club.
The Bulldogs, who were fourth after Monday's 36 holes, shot a final-round 318 to finish at 951, just one stroke behind fifth-place New Mexico State University and two shots behind fourth place Brigham Young University.
San Diego State University shot a final-round 303 for a 54-hole total of 918 to easily out-distance runner-up and host Long Beach State University in second at 926.
Howe shot a final-round 80 to finish with a 54-hole score of 951 over the 6,108-yard, par 72 layout that left her in a two-way tie for 10th. Tai Jade 'TJ' Kliebphipat was the lone Bulldog to break 80 Tuesday with a 75 to finish in a three-way tie for 13th as she improved eight places.
First-day leader Simone Hoey held onto her lead, shooting a final-round 72 for a 219 and a six-stroke victory over teammate Monica Villarreal.
"We let a couple of big fish off the hook today," head coach Brad Rickel said. "It was pretty disappointing to fall back two spots on the final day."
But he was pleased with Kliebphipat, a true freshman.
"TJ was really good today. Overall I think the course was the winner," Rickel said. "I hope playing two tough courses so far this spring will make us better the rest of the year."
