STOCKTON, Calif. - Tyler Chism's solo home run in the eighth inning helped the Gonzaga University baseball team beat the University of the Pacific 6-5 and extend the Bulldogs winning streak to three Saturday.
Chism led the Bulldogs (3-5) offensive efforts going 3-for-3 with two runs, a RBI and a walk. Clayton Eslick and Billy Moon also had multiple hits, each producing two. Starting pitcher Marco Gonzales was credited a no decision after allowing three earned runs on nine hits in four frames. Andy Hunter earned his first win of the season after going 1 2/3 innings late in the game and Cody Martin earned his second save of the year less than 24 hours after earning his first one Friday night.
The Bulldogs scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Chism hit a one-out single to center field and advanced to third on another single to center field by Steven Halcomb. Chism scored on a sacrifice bunt by Keegan Acker.
After pitching three shutout innings Gonzales' rhythm was broken in the fourth when the Tigers (2-6) offense exploded with a one-out triple followed by a RBI double and after a groundout to Eric Lane at third base the Tigers took a 3-1 lead with a double to left field.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the fifth inning. Acker got on base with a two-out walk and after Lane reached on an error by the shortstop Moon hit a two-run double to left center field. Moon advanced to third on a passed ball and Maxx Garrett hit an RBI double down the left field line to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.
The lead didn't last long as the Tigers led off the sixth inning with a double down the right field line and two strikeouts later a single down to right field brought in the runner from third to tie the game 4-4.
Gonzaga regained the lead in the seventh inning when Moon hit a single to center field and scored on a double by Garrett. The Tigers tied the game with a one-out single followed by an RBI double down the left field line.
Chism's solo home run to left center field in the eighth broke the 5-5 tie and Martin closed the game with a fly out followed by back-to-back strikeouts.
