Three-Run First Inning Lifts Zags Past Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Gonzaga University baseball team's offense scored three runs in the first inning and freshman Marco Gonzales pitched six shutout innings to defeat the University of Missouri 4-1 Wednesday afternoon to split the two-game series.
In his fourth start Gonzales (1-2) gave up three hits and struck out five. Andy Hunter surrendered an unearned run after going 1 1/3 innings and Cody Martin went the rest of the way striking out three and allowing two walks to earn his third save of the year.
Clayton Eslick produced two of the Bulldogs (5-6) eight hits while Eric Lane and Tyler Chism each drove in a run. Maxx Garrett saw his four-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-for-4.
The Bulldogs got on the board early when Billy Moon hit into a fielding error by the first baseman which allowed Lane to score from second base. Followed by Eslick's single to move him to third, Moon scored on a wild pitch and Chism's single brought in Eslick to give the Zags a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs made it 4-0 in the seventh inning when Steven Halcomb hit a one-out single to left field and after advancing to second on a groundout, Lane hit a RBI double down the right field line to score in Halcomb.
The Tigers (4-8) scored their only in the seventh inning. After a fielding error by Chism in right field which allowed Scott Sommerfeld to reach second, Blake Brown hit a one-out RBI single to score in the run.
The Zags head back to northern California to play a three-game series with the University of Minnesota on the campus of Sacramento State University starting Friday at 2:05 p.m.
