SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's Travis Johnsen was named to the All-West Coast Conference men's golf team announced Thursday.
Johnsen finished tied for fourth in the WCC Championship Tuesday, the highest individual finish for the Bulldogs in the history of the event.
He joins Derek Cheney and Kyle Huus as the only All-WCC first-team picks in Gonzaga history, Cheney and Huus each earning the honor in 2009.
Johnsen's 54-hole score of 214 also tied Cheney and Huus for the best WCC Championship total in school history.
"Travis has been working hard on his game and it was great to see him put together three solid rounds. He's had a couple of good rounds in most of his events this spring, but the third one has eluded him. Being in contention to win the WCC Championship is a great experience for him and one that will make him even better over the coming years," head coach Robert Gray said. "Finishing two shots back is real tough, especially with a post-season ticket on the line. The good news is he put himself in position to win going into the final round. You keep doing that and you'll come out on top at some point. I think this experience shows him that he's able to win at a high level and this will only make him hungrier to win.
"Making the All-Conference team is a great honor. We've got a lot of great players in our conference so to be in that same group is something special," Gray noted.
Alex Ching of the University of San Diego, who lost a playoff to Taylor Travis of the University of San Francisco for the WCC's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional after the two tied for medalist honors, was named Player of the Year. James Black of USF was tabbed Freshman of the Year. USD's Tim Mickelson and the University of Portland's Bill Winter were named Co-Coaches of the Year.
