Gonzales Named NCWBA First Team Freshman All-America

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Gonzaga University's Marco Gonzales has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-America First Team, as announced by the organization Monday.
A two-way player, Gonzales started 15 games as a pitcher, 29 as a first baseman and two as a left fielder. As a member of the Bulldogs pitching rotation, Gonzales led the West Coast Conference in wins (11) and owned a 2.57 earned-run average in 105 innings pitched. He also threw four complete-games and finished second in the WCC in strikeouts (90) behind teammate junior Ryan Carpenter. Offensively, he batted .291 with 10 doubles and 14 RBI. He recorded 253 putouts and 35 assists and committed only one error on opening day to post a .997 fielding percentage.
Earlier this month, the Fort Collins, Colo., native was named WCC Co-Player and Co-Freshman of the Year as well as both All-WCC and All-Freshman team selections. He was also earned Collegiate Baseball newspaper's Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America and Louisville Slugger TXP third team All-America selections.
The 2011 NCBWA Freshman All-American Team features players from 17 conferences and seven conference championship teams. The two All-American squads are also made up of 14 conference "Rookie of the Year" winners.
Four teams placed two players (overall) on the two teams, while 26 schools placed at least one player on the teams. Jacksonville placed two players on the first team, while Arkansas, Texas and Vanderbilt also each had two players selected to the teams.
The ACC, Atlantic Sun, MEAC and SEC placed two players apiece on the first team. The SEC put six members on the first and second teams, the Atlantic Sun had four and the ACC and Big South had three selections apiece on the two squads.
The 2011 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, June 14.
