SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University senior Cody Martin has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month for May, as announced by the conference office Friday. This is Martin's first monthly honor and Gonzaga's second straight.
Martin made nine appearances in the month of May. He didn't receive a decision but recorded five saves and owned a 0.63 earned-run average in 14 1/3 innings of work. He also struck out 14 and allowed six hits. At one point during the month, Martin retired 26 of 28 batters, including 15 straight during the stretch. He also closed out the ninth inning in order in the five times.
He opened the month contributing both offensively and defensively at Santa Clara University May 1. He pitched a month-high three shutout innings and surrendered one hit and two walks. Martin led off the ninth inning with a double to left field to record his first hit in his illustrious collegiate career. He would eventually reach home on Tyler Chism's two-out single.
In his final season as a Bulldog, Martin closed out his career with his first All-WCC team selection, as announced by the conference office Wednesday. In addition to posting the best ERA (0.86) in the country at the end of the regular season, Martin compiled a 2-1 record and 12 saves, breaking the program's single-season record of nine which he set as a freshman.
