TUSCON, Ariz. - Gonzaga University's Marco Gonzales has been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team, as announced and selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper Wednesday.
This is Gonzales' second Collegiate Baseball post-season award. The Fort Collins, Colo., native was named to the newspaper's Louisville Slugger TPX third team All-America as a pitcher this past Thursday. He also becomes the first Bulldog to be named to the Freshman All-America team since Cody Martin in 2008.
As a pitcher, the 2011 West Coast Conference Co-Player and Co-Freshman of the Years posted an 11-2 record with a 2.57 earned-run average in 105 innings pitched. He earned the most wins in the conference and finished second behind teammate Ryan Carpenter in strikeouts (90). He threw four complete-games including three straight in the middle of the season. One of his best outings was this past Saturday, where he struck out a career-high 12 batters in 8 2/3 innings to help the Bulldogs complete the 7-5 come-from-behind win against the University of San Francisco.
Also a first baseman, Gonzales owned a .291 batting average with 10 doubles and 14 RBI. Among career-bests, he turned in a four-hit game in the WCC season-opener against the University of San Diego and drove in two runs in a game four times.
