SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University senior forward Sarah Rhodes has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for leading the Bulldogs to the Bronco Invite championship, WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich announced Monday.
Rhodes scored three goals to push her career total to 15 to move into fifth on the all-time Gonzaga goals list, one behind Katie Carpenter (1997-00).
Rhodes spearheaded a second-half comeback Friday against the Air Force Academy with a pair of second-half goals as Gonzaga overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit for the 2-1 victory. That set up a winner-take-all showdown Sunday with host Boise State University. Rhodes scored the only goal of the match at 5:34 as Gonzaga claimed the crown.
"We challenged Sarah - and all off the upperclassmen - all week," Gonzaga head coach Amy Edwards said. "She stepped up big time and took this team on her shoulders all weekend."
Rhodes and the Bulldogs hope the momentum from this past weekend carries over into Friday's regular-season opener against Weber State University at 4 p.m. on Gonzaga Soccer Field.
