All Five Starters In Double-Figures As Zags Defeat Waves

Box Score

MALIBU, Calif. - Gonzaga University women's basketball seniors Katelan Redmon and Kelly Bowen each recorded double-doubles to pace the Bulldogs to a 79-50 West Coast Conference victory over Pepperdine University Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu. Redmon scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Bowen chipped in 12 points and brought down a career-high 13 boards.

The Bulldogs improved their overall record to 13-2 with the win and are now 2-0 in league. The Waves fell to 7-7 overall and were dealt their first WCC loss of the season and are 2-1.

"To have two road league wins is always a good thing," stated head coach Kelly Graves after the game. "We won tonight's game in good fashion."

The Bulldogs commanded the game from the start as they ran out to an 8-2 advantage at 16:06 and pushed it to 19-4 with 10:24 left in the opening 20 minutes. Five different players scored for Gonzaga in the opening burst and was led by junior Taelor Karr with seven points, hitting a 3-pointer and making two layups. During the beginning moments, the Bulldogs held the Waves to 2-of-12 shooting.

Gonzaga claimed its largest lead of the first half at 29-9 with 4:47 left in the half. Redmon got into the action, hitting six-straight points for the Zags.

A small shift in momentum came when Karr came down with a defensive board. Surrounded by three Pepperdine players, she tried to get free and was called for a flagrant foul. Wave Katie Menton hit both subsequent free throws. Using its stingy press to force five turnovers, Pepperdine would then end the half on a 13-6 run, with seven of the 13 coming from the charity stripe to cut Gonzaga's halftime advantage to 35-22.

"Despite the breakdown at the end of the half, the points Pepperdine scored came either on our turnovers or at the free throw line. So overall, we had a good plan defensively and the players executed it tremendously."

The Bulldogs still closed out the half shooting 50.0 from the field (15-of-30) and held the 29-16 rebounding advantage. The Zags had 14 turnovers though, and Pepperdine scored 15 points off those.

Gonzaga was back in prime form to start the second half, using a 23-7 spurt to take a 29-point lead at 29-58 with 12:11 to play in the game. Again the Bulldogs spread around the scoring as five different players got into the action. Redshirt Haiden Palmer had the high points during the run with eight.

The Bulldogs kept the lead above 26 points the rest of the half. Their largest lead was 34 points at 77-43 with 1:55 remaining. It was freshman Sunny Grienacher that gave the Zags the lead on a jumper - two of her six points in the game.

Ten of the 12 players that saw action for Gonzaga scored. All five starters broke double-digits as senior Kayla Standish added 12 points, along with eight boards. Palmer had 11 and Karr finished with 10.

The Bulldogs closed out the game shooting 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the floor and was 71.4 percent (10-of-14) at the charity stripe.

GU held the huge 55-29 rebounding advantage.

Pepperdine was led by Katie Menton with a game-high 15 points.

Gonzaga closes out its two-game California roadswing at Loyola Marymount University Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
