Women's Basketball Rolls To 80-54 Win At LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team closed out its two-game California roadtrip with an 80-54 West Coast Conference victory at Loyola Marymount University Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 14-2 on the year and improved their league mark to 3-0.

"It feels good to come home with two victories," said head coach Kelly Graves after the game. "It is very important to get road wins and it is never easy. Give LMU a lot of credit; they play hard, tough and physical. It the end we were just too much for them."

After a close few minutes, Gonzaga used a 13-3 run to turn a 5-5 tie into a 17-7 advantage with 13:20 left in the first half. It was senior Kayla Standish that ended the run for the Bulldogs, muscling six-straight points.

Alex Cowling kept the Lions into the game early, scoring their first nine points. A different LMU player finally scored when Ashley Lovett hit a long jumper to cut Gonzaga's advantage to 17-11 at 11:38.

The Bulldogs grabbed their largest lead of the game three minutes later when a short 8-0 run turned a 5-point advantage into a 13-point edge at 27-14 with 8:19 to play. Redshirt sophomore Haiden Palmer started things off with a 3-pointer while it was senior Kelly Bowen who capped it off with a fastbreak layup.

The Lions themselves strung together a 13-7 to close out the first half to put Gonzaga's lead at 34-26. Cowling scored six of the 13 points, including the final four for Loyola Marymount.

Gonzaga ended the first half shooting 60.0 percent (12-of-20) from the floor and was 87.5 percent (7-of-8) at the free throw line.

Cowling, who finished with 15 of the Lions 26 first half points, started things off for Loyola Marymount in the second half scoring a layup. She would have seven of the Lions first nine points.

But while Cowling was nearly the only one scoring for LMU, the Bulldogs rattled off a 21-9 run, including the final 13 to claim a 20-point advantage at 55-35 9:43 left in the game. Five different players scored for the Bulldogs with Standish and senior Katelan Redmon each with six points.

Loyola Marymount didn't have an answer as Gonzaga continued to roll. Its largest lead of the game came at with 2:38 left when freshman Keani Albanez converted an old fashion 3-point play to put the score at 73-43.

Gonzaga was smoking hot from the field, finishing the game hitting 61.2 percent (30-of-49) and was 80.0 percent (16-of-20) at the charity strip. Standish led all Zags with 22 points, hitting 8-of-12 from the floor and all six of her free throws. Freshman Sunny Grienacher came off the bench to add a career-high 12 points. Senior Katelan Redmon added 10.

Cowling finished with a game-high 27 for LMU. No other player scored more than seven points for the Lions.

Gonzaga returns to action next Thursday when it hosts the University of San Francisco. The game is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcasted on SWX.
