SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University seniors Andy Hunter, Maxx Garrett and sophomore Marco Gonzales earned a spot on the West Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic Team, the league announced Friday.
Hunter, a right-handed pitcher and first baseman, has appeared in 48 games this season. At the plate, he owns a .294 batting average with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBI. He's also started 13 of 14 appearances on the mound, going 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings of work. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Hunter held a 3.48 grade-point average and graduated this spring with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Garrett has started all 54 games from behind home plate. He is currently hitting .220 with six two-baggers, a triple, two round trippers and 23 RBI. Defensively, he has picked off two runners and has caught 12 runners stealing in 42 attempts. A native of Kennewick, Wash., Garrett graduated this spring with a degree in sports management, carrying a 3.54 GPA.
Gonzales has started 40 of 41 games. While he is primarily a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, Gonzales has also spent some time in the outfield. On the mound, he is 7-2 with a 1.70 ERA, which ranked 15th-best in the latest NCAA rankings Monday. He's also punched out 80 batters in 84 2/3 innings. Offensively, he carries a .308 batting average with eight doubles and two homers while driving in 24 runs. The Fort Collins, Colo., native holds 3.34 GPA in sports management.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
