Bulldogs Baseball Shutout By Rainbows In Series Finale

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Gonzaga University baseball was going for the series sweep against the University of Hawai'i Tuesday night, but came up just shy in a 2-0 defeat in Les Murakami Stadium. The Bulldogs did take three of the four games over the weekend.

The loss drops the Zags to 9-5-1 overall and Hawai'i claims its second victory to go to 2-15.

The only runs of the game were scored in the bottom of the third inning. Stephen Ventimilia singled in the first Rainbow and would score himself on a Marc Flores base hit to center field.

It was Rainbow starter Matt Cooper who held the Zag offense in check. Cooper pitched a complete game three-hitter to win his first game of the season.

Gonzaga's hits came from Cory LeBrun, a single in the top of the second inning, and Mitchell Gunsolus, a single in the third and a double in the ninth.

Bulldogs starter, Billy Moon (0-1), pitched 2.1 innings allowing the two runs to pick up the loss. Arturo Reyes stepped in relief for the Zags and threw 4.2 scoreless innings. David Bigelow also got in some work in the bottom of the eighth.

Gonzaga returns to Spokane Friday with its home opener and first West Coast Conference game of the season. The University of San Francisco will visit Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
