STOCKTON, Calif. - The 2013 West Coast Conference Baseball Championship field is set and the top-seeded Gonzaga University is set to face fourth-seed University of San Francisco Thursday at 3 p.m.
The top four teams in the final WCC regular-season standings qualified for the tournament held at Banner Island Ballpark, home of the Stockton Ports. Along with the Zags and Dons, the University of San Diego and BYU fill out the bracket. The Toreros enter as the second-seed and the Cougars are the third-seed.
The Bulldogs stood atop the WCC standings and were crowned the regular-season champs with an 18-6 conference record. San Diego, BYU and San Francisco all tied for second in the standings with a 15-9 mark but league bylaws sorted out the championship seeding.
Gonzaga opened WCC play March 15 against San Francisco in Spokane. The Bulldogs took the series two games to one including a 14-inning walk-off thriller in series opener. In the series Steven Halcomb hit .467 (7-for-15) with a homerun. In his opening game start, Marco Gonzales went eight innings scattering four hits, striking out six and allowing two runs.
The Gonzaga and San Francisco game opens the WCC Championships with a 3 p.m. scheduled first pitch. San Diego and BYU play in the nightcap Thursday at 7 p.m.
A win puts Gonzaga in the 3:30 p.m. game against the winner of San Diego/BYU. If the Bulldogs fall to USF, the club will play Torero/Cougar loser Friday at noon.
Games Friday and Saturday will be live streamed on the WCC Network and the championship Sunday will be featured ESPNU starting at 7 p.m.
