HOME OPENER ON TAP FOR ZAGS; WOMEN'S SOCCER HOSTS FRESNO STATE FRIDAY: The Gonzaga University women's soccer teams hosts its home opener Friday at the Gonzaga Soccer Field. The Zags will battle Fresno State at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs are looking to snap a two-match losing skid, while the Fresno State Bulldogs are looking for their first victory of 2013.
ABOUT THE FRESNO STATE BULLDOGS: The Fresno State women's soccer team is currently 0-3 on the new season. The Bulldogs opened the year with a 2-0 setback at UC Santa Barbara followed by a 1-0 loss at Cal State Fullerton. Last weekend, Fresno State dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara University. The Bulldogs, members of the Mountain West Conference, have gotten off 26 shots - 12 on goal - but have yet to break the goal line. Morgan Castain leads the team with seven shots. Fresno State is coached by Brian Zwaschka, in his fifth year at the helm.
GONZAGA HEAD COACH AMY EDWARDS TO BE INDUCTED INTO TULSA'S HALL OF FAME: Gonzaga University women's soccer head coach Amy Edwards will be inducted into the University of Tulsa Athletic Hall of Fame Thursday. Edwards (1988-91) was a four-year letterwinner and starter for the Tulsa women's soccer team, and later became the school's head coach. She completed her playing career with 71 points on 30 goals and 11 assists to rank among the school's top-10 for career points, goals and assists. Edwards was a second-team all-South Region All-America selection in 1991 and was a member of the U.S. Olympic Festival South Team in 1994. She returned to TU as an assistant coach and served as head women's soccer coach for four years, compiling a 47-25-6 record.
EMILY ECKMANN NOTCHES THIRD CAREER GOAL: Gonzaga University women's soccer senior Emily Eckmann notched the Bulldogs lone goal in their 2-1 setback at Oklahoma State University, Sept. 1. Eckmann's goal in the 69th minute tied the match at 1-1. It was the midfielders third goal of her career and first since her sophomore season.
AMY EDWARDS IN FIFTH YEAR AT THE HELM: Gonzaga University women's soccer head coach Amy Edwards is in her fifth-year at the helm in 2013. Edwards currently holds a 32-46-4 overall record and is the second winningest coach in Gonzaga history. To see Edwards' full bio, go to GoZags.com.
MIKAYLA ANDERSON SCORES WINNING GOAL IN ZAGS OPENING WIN: Gonzaga University women's soccer redshirt sophomore Mikayla Anderson scored the game winning goal in the Bulldogs opening 1-0 victory at Eastern Washington University, Aug. 23. Anderson's goal came in the 41st minute, was on her lone shot of the afternoon and was her first collegiate goal of her career. The victory was the Zags fifth-straight season opening win.
ZAGS DEFEAT OKLAHOMA 2-1 IN LONE EXHIBITION MATCH: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team battled back to earn a 2-1 victory over the University of Oklahoma in an exhibition match, Aug. 18 at the Gonzaga Soccer Field. The Bulldogs, down 1-0 late in the second half, tallied two goals in the final eight minutes to secure the come-from-behind exhibition win over the Big 12 Conference Sooners. Freshman defender Sarah Carter notched the first goal; a header off a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Tori Lee. Lee then scored the gamewinner off a free kick.
WHAT GONZAGA RETURNS: The Gonzaga University women's soccer squad returns 14 letterwinners in 2013, including seven starters, and adds 11 newcomers and two returning redshirts. The team is led by seniors Emily Eckmann and Ali Ohashi, along with a strong junior class of Tori Lee, Cricket Harber, Katey Pennington, Kasey Rubosky and Jordan Travis. Rubosky, a midfielder, returns as the squad's leader in points and goals, having notched 10 points on four goals and two assists a season ago. Lee, another midfielder, is the Bulldogs returning assists leader, having tallied five as a sophomore.
A TON OF NEW FACES: Gonzaga University welcomes 11 newcomers to its women's soccer team in 2013. The last time the Bulldogs has such a large freshman class was in 2010 when head coach Amy Edwards - then in her second season with the Zags - also welcomed 11 freshman. This year's freshman class consists of four defenders, three midfielders, two forwards and two goalkeepers. They also represent four different states: California, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
COACHES TAB ZAGS NINTH: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team has been selected to finish ninth in the 2013 West Coast Conference season according to a preseason vote of the league's head coaches. The Zags received 22 votes in this year's poll, after losing four starters off a squad that went 8-11-1 and 1-6-1 in the conference a year ago. Santa Clara University was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 WCC title. The Broncos captured all nine possible first place votes, and 81 overall points in the poll.
