Nazal Advances to Quarterfinals of ITA Regionals

PALO ALTO, Calif.—The Gonzaga University men's tennis team continued play at the ITA Northwest Regionals Saturday, and it turned out to be a great day for Alvaro Nazal, who advanced onto the quarterfinals of the tournament with a pair of main singles draw victories.

Nazal posted victories over two Pac-12 opponents to advance, beating California's Gregory Bayane and Washington's Emmett Egger, the bracket's fifth seed, Saturday. The Chilean took down Bayane 6-3, 6-1 in the Round of 32 during the morning session to set up a match against Egger, ranked No. 83 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Egger took the first set from Nazal 4-6, but the Zag battled back for a 6-4 victory of his own in the second to force a deciding third set. The two battled all throughout the frame, but Nazal came out ahead in a set tiebreak, winning the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). He will face Nolan Paige of host Stanford in the quarterfinal.

"We are all very excited for Alvaro and the success that he is having in this tournament," said Gonzaga men's tennis head coach Peter MacDonald. "It is inspiring to watch him compete."

Also on Saturday, four other Zags playing in the ITA Northwest Regionals began consolation round play with two of them coming away victorious. Vladimir Mijatovic was one of those with a victory, besting Brent Chin of Oregon. Mijatovic came out hot to begin the match, winning the first set with ease at 6-1. He and Chin battled to a second set tiebreak, which Chin won 6-7 (6), and Mijatovic prevailed in the third set super tiebreak 10-4.

Also winning his consolation match Saturday, Joey Brandt dispatched Nacor Ibanez of Portland State in three sets. Ibanez won the first set 1-6, but Brandt fought back and won a tight second set via a tiebreak, 7-6(4). Brandt also won the third set super tiebreak 10-5 for his first singles victory of the tournament.

Also playing in the consolation bracket, Sergio Chip fell 6-4, 6-3 to Brett Bacharach of UC Davis and Vicente Varas lost to James Markiewicz of Saint Marys 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles play, Nazal and Nick Kamisar fell in the main doubles bracket to Portland's Alex Hamilton and Sem Verbeek. The Pilots' duo won 8-5. Two Gonzaga pairs played consolation matches as Brandt and Mijatovic teamed up to form one Zag pair and Chip and Varas partnered in another. Chip and Varas took six games from Sacramento State's Roy Brandys and Kasparas Zemaitelis, but the Hornets' duo prevailed 8-6. Brandt and Mijatovic, meanwhile, fell 8-4 to Portland State's Ian Risenhoover and Brent Wheeler.

The Zags will continue the ITA Northwest Regionals on Sunday, Oct. 19. Play at Tabue Family Tennis Stadium begins at 10:00 a.m. while Nazal takes the court for his quarterfinal match at 12:00 p.m.
