MBB Impresses in Sold Out Kraziness in The Kennel

SPOKANE, Wash. - In front of a capacity crowd at Kraziness in the Kennel on Saturday, the Gonzaga men's basketball team showed its depth, athleticism and impressive group of newcomers.

Fans were treated a full day of action, beginning with inflatables and other activites at the Pre-Kraziness Carnival on the McCarthey Athletic Center South Lawn. The show moved inside at 4 p.m. with player and coach introductions and highlight reels that preceded the main attraction.

A three-point shootout commenced and senior Kevin Pangos knocked down 10 of 15 threes in the first round and then 12 of 15 threes in the second round to defeat Gary Bell Jr.'s 11 of 15. The Zags then took flight in a dunk contest between Angel Nunez, Bryan Alberts, Silas Melson and Connor Griffin. Melson, a freshman from Portland, Ore., showed off his hops to take the crown.

Head coach Mark Few split his teams into two squads for a 20-minute scrimmage. The Blue Squad, led by Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer's 11 points and seven rebounds, took a 41-32 victory. Bell and freshman Josh Perkins each added eight points for the winning side.

On the Red, freshman Domantas Sabonis poured in 10 points and grabbed three rebounds. USC transfer Byron Wesley also impressed the Zag faithful, going 4-for-5 for nine points and adding three rebounds. Pangos notched five points, two rebounds and an assist.

"I think we're taking some steps," head coach Mark Few said. "Nothing is going to be given. We've got to establish an identity of who this team is, and we took some good steps toward that this week. It was nice to see a couple guys step up and play tonight."

Gonzaga opens the season with an exhibition against Thompson Rivers University on Nov. 1 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be televised on KHQ. The first regular season game kicks off four consecutive home games and is on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. against Sacramento State on ROOT SPORTS/KHQ.
