Zags Close out Road Slate at Saint Mary's

HTML Box Score

MORAGA, Calif.—The Gonzaga University men's soccer squad played its final road match of the 2014 season Friday, falling 2-0 to Saint Mary's at Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga, Calif.

"We had our chances in the first half," said Gonzaga men's soccer head coach Einar Thorarinsson. "They took advantage of our mistake for the second goal. It was a tough game to lose for the guys."

Like many Gonzaga matches recently, the Zags controlled much of the action in the first half. They only outshot the Gaels 4-3 in the period, but all four of the GU shots were on frame as opposed to just one for Saint Mary's. The Zags tallied the first shot of the match when Jalen Crisler got his head on a pass and pushed it towards the frame, but Saint Mary's keeper Andre Rawls got his hands on it to prevent an early goal. Six minutes later Gonzaga attempted the match's first corner kick. On the play, Ben White offered up a ball to Zach Hamer, who also got a head on the ball. Rawls again made the save, one of his four in the first half.

Despite it being the only shot on goal of the period for Saint Mary's, the Gaels took the lead with an attempt on frame four minutes before the halftime break. Will Kendall nodded a header into the GU net after touches by Rafael Sanchez and Alex Braman off a throw in.

Saint Mary's netted a second in the 65th minute, 20 minutes into the second half. The Gaels' Eikani Carlo collected a Zag turnover in the GU part of the field. One-on-one with keeper Chris Lowrimore, Carlo tapped the ball in for the score.

Gonzaga took five more shots in the second half, one of which was on target. That came in the 57th minute by Conner Bevans. The Zags had more scoring opportunities with 10 minutes remaining in the match. They attempted two corners in just over a minute at that point, and Graison Le took a shot that went wide at 81:00. Nothing fell for the Zags, however, and the match ended at 2-0 in favor of the Gaels.

The Zags (3-12-1, 1-3-1 WCC) will round out the 2014 season at the friendly confines of Luger Field. They begin the two-match homestand to close out the season Sunday, Nov. 9, with a match against Pacific. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and the Tigers is slated for 1:00 p.m.
