KIRKLAND, Wash.—The Gonzaga University men's tennis squad continued its strong play at the PNW Intercollegiates Saturday, reaching the finals in five brackets at Central Park Tennis Club in Kirkland, Wash.
Four Zags advanced to the finals of their singles brackets, with Nick Kamisar reaching the final in Flight Two. He beat Portland's Steffen Dierauf 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2) to reach the final. This will be Kamisar's second singles final of the fall as he won the EWU Fall Classic's top bracket in September.
Hayden Smith continued to play strong in his first tournament of the season, beating the Pilots' Pierre Garcia 6-2, 6-4. Garcia was Flight 4's top seed. In the next bracket, Flight 5, Vladimir Mijatovic outlasted Portland State's Matt Pronesti in three sets. The Zag dropped the first set 4-6, but took the second 6-3 and the third in a tiebreak 7-6 (5) for the win.
Rounding out Gonzaga's finalists in singles play, Vicente Varas posted an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dominique Gilli, also of Portland.
A pair of Zags lost in singles play as Sergio Chip fell in three sets 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to Mathieu Garcia of Portland in Flight 3, and Alvaro Nazal suffered just his third singles loss of the season, falling to Emmett Egger of Washington 7-5, 7-6 (2).
In Flight 2 of the doubles competition, Chip and Varas remained alive with a 8-4 pro set victory over the Pilots' duo of Garcia and Jamie Fisher. They will play for the bracket championship Sunday. Nazal and Kamisar also played a doubles match, falling 8-5 to Boise State's Toby Mitchell and Brian Foley.
