KELOWNA, British Columbia - Gonzaga University's Hayden Smith has advanced to the Main Draw of 32 at the Kelowna Futures Tennis Tournament.
The native of Breakfast Point, Australia, and junior-to-be advanced with qualifying wins over Kelvin Kim of the United States 7-5, 6-2; Marc Robert of Canada 6-0, 6-0, and Mesa Mei of the USA 6-3, 7-5. Mei graduated from Xavier University this year after earning Atlantic 10 Conference first-team honors as a junior in 2013 and All-BIG EAST first-team accolades this past season. He recorded 17 wins playing No. 1 and No. 2 singles this season.
Smith will face fellow Australian (Gold Coast) Ben Mitchell in his first-round Main Draw match Wednesday. Mitchell is currently ranked 266 in the world and was ranked as high as 209 in 2012.
Senior-to-be Nick Kamisar of the Bulldogs had a first-round bye in the qualifying stage and defeated Saul Shrom of Canada 6-4, 6-0 in the second round. Kamisar, from Sammamish, Wash., lost his third-round match to Mousheg Hovhannisyan of the U.S. 6-3, 6-2.
