ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—For the second straight tournament, the Gonzaga University women's golf squad saved its best for last by shooting a season-best 291 (-1) Tuesday during the final round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational held on the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
"I am happy with our play this week," said women's golf head coach Brad Rickel. "Today we showed up and played hard again. We are grinding and finding a way to keep pace with the best teams in the country."
Three Zags shot par or better during Tuesday's round. Both Alice Kim and Ciera Min fired 1-under-par 72 during Tuesday. Kim's strong round moved her into a tie for 12th at 221 strokes (+2) for the tournament, her first Top 20 finish of the season.
Min's final round moved her into a tie for 25th with a two-day total of 223 strokes (+4). She has finished in the Top 25 of her last five regular season tournaments.
Joining Kim in a tie for 12th was Dania Uy. Uy shot 2-under-par 71 and even-par 73 in her final two rounds to race up the leaderboard. This is the freshman's first Top 20 finish of her career.
"Dania had a great tournament in just her second event," Rickel said of the freshman. "She learned a tremendous amount last week about how college golf is played and was solid."
After carding a 1-over-par 74 Tuesday, Raychelle Santos finished the Dick McGuire Invitational in a tie for 27th with a total score of 224, five strokes above par.
"Alice was up and down this week but kept getting after it," Rickel said. "Ciera and Raycelle were both solid the entire week as well."
Angela De Villa also competed as part of the Bulldogs' scoring team but did not tally a complete tournament score. She withdrew from the second round before Tuesday morning's due to illness.
"Angela had to withdraw from the second round but played the third even though she felt horrible," said Rickel. "We are proud of her giving it her all when she felt really bad."
Competing as an individual, Han Wu finished in a tie for 67th after counting 236 strokes (+17) during the two-day tournament. She fired a 4-over 77 Tuesday, her best round of the week.
After their collective day under par, the Zags finished alone in seventh place with 889 strokes (+13). Northwestern won the tournament with a total of 8-under-par 868, and UNLV's Dana Finkelstein won medalist honors with a tally of 210 strokes, nine below par.
Thanks to a major rain and hail storm that forced the postponement of play Sept. 15, the teams completed the final few holes of the second round before the third round began Tuesday.
The field of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational was one of the toughest the Zags will face this season. Three teams, including champion Northwestern, were among GolfWeekly's Top 15 in the preseason rankings and six more were in the publication's Top 50.
The Zags now have three weeks off before hitting the links again. They next compete in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational hosted by Washington at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash. That tournament will take place Tues., Oct. 7 and Wed., Oct. 8.
