CHENEY, Wash.—The final day of the EWU Fall Classic will have a distinct Gonzaga flair as half the championship participants will represent Gonzaga University men's tennis team.
Both competitors of the ‘A' flight championship will come from Gonzaga as teammates Alvaro Nazal and Nick Kamisar will square off for the title. Nazal tallied sweeps of Riley Newman and Will Topp, both from Seattle University, in order to reach the title match. Kamisar took down Lewis-Clark State's Sonam Phuntsok 6-0, 6-2 and Robert Dula of Eastern Washington in three sets on his path to the championship.
Just a few minutes after competing against each other, Nazal and Kamisar will join forces to compete for the tournament's doubles title. They beat fellow Zags Vladimir Mijatovic and Joey Brandt 6-2, 6-3 for the right to play for that title as well.
In the doubles consolation bracket, Sergio Chip and Vicente Varas will also go for a title as they came out winners in their semifinal matchup with Eastern Washington's team of Dula and Eduardo Martinez. The Zags' duo won the first set 6-2, but fell in the second 5-7. In the deciding third set super tiebreak, though, Chip and Varas prevailed 10-5 and they earned a spot in the bracket's final match.
In the ‘B' singles bracket, Chip advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tony Chin of Lewis-Clark State. In that semifinal match, however, he fell to Idaho's Felipe Fonseca 6-4, 6-4 to close out his participation in the Fall Classic.
In the ‘A' flight's consolation bracket, Varas tallied a win in the morning session over Lewis-Clark State's Quentin Wacquez, but fell to Idaho's Odon Barta in three sets in the consolation's semifinal match.
"As a whole, I was happy to see the guys supporting each other, win or lose," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald.
The Zags will wrap up the EWU Fall Classic, their first tournament of the 2014-15 season, Sunday, Sept. 28. Nazal and Kamisar's singles match will begin at 10:00 a.m. while the doubles matches are slated to start around 12:00 p.m.
