Oct. 11, 2015 Saint Mary's Final Results
MORAGA, Calif.--The Gonzaga University women's tennis team reached the halfway point in its 2015 tournament season Sunday by completing play at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational in Moraga, Calif.
Senior Sissi Koehler reached the final of the C Singles flight with three wins combined Oct. 9-10, and she competed with UC Davis' Isabella Von Ebbe Sunday for the bracket title. Von Ebbe picked up the early advantage with a 6-3 first set win, but Koehler countered by taking the second 5-7. The Aggie won the third set by a break, however, giving Koehler her first singles loss of the weekend.
In the A Singles bracket, freshman Sophie Whittle also went to three sets against San Jose State's Sybille Gauvain during their semifinal matchup. Whittle lost the first set 6-3 but won the second 5-7. Gauvain claimed the deciding set 6-4 for the win; the Spartan went on to win the bracket championship in two sets over Saint Mary's' Jamie Pawid.
Two Gonzaga doubles teams competed for their flight's consolation title, but both teams fell in the final. Whittle and senior Samantha Polayes, who earned their spot in the consolation final Oct. 10, won six games in their pro set, but it wasn't enough as San Jose State's duo of Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey took the match 8-6. The Spartan team entered the A Doubles bracket as the flight's top seed. In the B Doubles Consolation, Koehler and freshman Domonique Garley started their day with a semifinal victory over Saint Mary's' duo of Emma Critser and Vanessa Nommensen, beating the WCC foes 8-7 (5) in a tiebreak. In the final, they fell to Cal Poly's pair of Abigail and Bryn Bacharach 8-3.
Those no longer in bracket play did see additional matches Sunday. Three Zags won their bonus singles competitions, headlined by freshman Nevada Apollo's 6-1, 6-0 victory over Emily Gibbens of Cal Poly. Polayes also picked up a solid two-set win, beating Sacramento State's Alina Soltanici 6-3, 6-1, while Garley beat Bryn Bacharach in a super tiebreak 4-6, 6-1, (10-5).
Sophomore Alex Bourguignon also played an extra singles match, testing herself against California's Olivia Hauger. Hauger took the match 6-2, 6-3.
In additional doubles play, Bourguignon and Apollo teamed up to beat Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva of Eastern Michigan 8-1.
The Zags will have 12 days on the practice court before returning to tournament play. Their next competition will also take place in the Bay Area as the Bulldogs will head to Palo Alto, Calif., for the ITA Northwest Regionals. That tournament will run Friday, Oct. 23 until Sunday, Oct. 25.
