PEORIA, Ill. â€" Gonzaga's men's soccer team had goals from Ben White and Christo Michaelson in a dominating 2-0 performance on the road at Bradley on Friday night.
"Two great goals from those two guys [White and Michaelson], and a great team win," head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "Chris [Lowrimore] in goal was just outstanding. It was a very end-to-end game. They pressed the whole game. So we had to withstand some attacking from their part, but our defense just stood strong."
The Zags outshot the Braves 22-12 overall and 9-5 in shots on goal, which led to a solid offensive performance that had several good chances to score. Gonzaga was equally as good on defense, handling a high-pressure team in Bradley. GU goalkeeper Chris Lowrimore earned his fourth shutout of the season with five saves, his second-highest total of the year.
Gonzaga had chances early, but was able to strike in the 41st minute with White's rocket from just inside the 18-yard box to the top right corner of the net. Colton Cavey and Sam Olson earned assists with the setup before White's shot. The goal gave White the team lead in that category on the season, and with an assist later in the game, he became the team leader in points with seven on the year.
Then in the 70th minute, Michaelson got free with helpers from White and freshman Jake Kempf who crossed the ball to the far post. From there, Michaelson found the back of the net for his second of the season and the goal that the Zags needed to widen the gap.
Gonzaga held on from there with some stingy defense and more pressure on offense. White led the way with six total shots, including three on goal, while Jakob Granlund had five and two on goal. Graison Le notched four shots with two on goal and Kempf had three shots with one on goal.
"It was a great overall team effort from the guys," Thorarinsson said. "A good win from them and we are looking forward to a ranked opponent on Monday."
Gonzaga will face eighth-ranked Denver on Monday as part of its six-game road trip. The Pioneers are 8-0-1 on the season and are coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014. The game is set for 4 p.m. PT/5 p.m. MT and will be televised on Altitude Network, as well as online at www.denverpioneers.com.
