Results and Draws

PALO ALTO, Calif.-The Gonzaga University women's tennis team wrapped up a hugely successful ITA Northwest Regional tournament Sunday with a doubles pair reaching the quarterfinal of the main doubles draw at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.

Samantha Polayes and Sophie Whittle became the first GU duo to reach a Regional quarterfinal since 2001, beating a fifth-seeded squad of Melissa Lord and Kimberly Lee. The Bulldog duo took down the ranked Stanford pair 8-5 for the ticket onward. That ride did end in the quarterfinals, however, as California's Klara Fabikova and Olivia Hauger, the third-seeded team in the bracket, beat the Zag pair 8-1. With their three wins at ITAs, Polayes and Whittle are now 8-4 on the year in doubles play.

Gonzaga's other doubles pair also picked up a win Sunday as Nevada Apollo and Alex Bourguignon won their consolation match. The Zag duo squared off against WCC foes Emma Critser and Kareena Manji of Saint Mary's, beating the Gaels 8-4.

Bourguignon and Apollo also played a singles consolation match Sunday. Bourguignon ended the tournament on a strong note, coming back from being a set down to beat Victoria Matejevic of Washington State. The Cougar won the first set 4-6, but Bourguignon evened the contest with a second set tiebreak victory at 7-6 (4). The Seattle native then won the third set super tiebreak 10-8 for her third singles win of the weekend. Apollo also squared off against a Pac-12 opponent, playing well against Elianne Douglas-Miron of Washington but coming up short at 7-6 (4), 6-4.

"As a whole, I am pleased with how we competed throughout the entire tournament," said Gonzaga assistant coach Megan Falcon. "I saw area where we can improve, but I am definitely happy with the progress we have made through the fall thus far."

With the conclusion of the ITA Northwest Regionals, the Bulldogs will return to Spokane and wrap up the fall tournament season at their own Gonzaga Invitational. The second-year tournament will run Nov. 6-8 at The Stevens Center.
