PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland women's soccer team scored a goal in the first half and held off Gonzaga for a 1-0 West Coast Conference victory Saturday.
In a fairly matched contest, the Pilots (7-11-0, 3-5-0 West Coast Conference) and GU were even with eight shots. Portland placed six shots on goal, while the Zags had two. The teams combined for six corner kicks, with both teams taking three.
In the final road game of the season for the Bulldogs, Jodi Ulkekul took three shots, placing two on frame. Heather Johnson took her 174th, 175th and 176th career shots and is now nine away from second in program history. Sarah Carter and Kristin Hayman both took a shot as well.
Christie Tombari made five saves for the Zags (2-11-5, 1-6-1 WCC). Three of her saves came in the second half. She continues to lead the conference with 95 saves this season. Rachel Lusby stopped a pair of shots for Portland.
Noelle La Prevotte scored her fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute. She struck a ball from the top of the box into the Bulldog net. Cecilia Pedersen was credited with her third assist of the season. Both La Prevotte and Pedersen have 11 points this season, with four goals and three assists.
"I am encouraged by our second half today," Gonzaga Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "But, we were unable to overcome the goal we gave up after a drop off in our defensive presence the last 20 minutes of the first half."
Gonzaga returns home for its final game of the regular season. The Zags welcome No. 15 Santa Clara (11-5-2, 4-1-2) next Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs will honor two seniors, Johnson and Lexi Clark on Senior Day. The duo has combined for 116 appearances during their four-year GU careers.
