SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's basketball team cruised to an 88-35 victory in their regular season-opener against Air Force Friday.
The Zags (1-0) won their 12th straight home-opener in dominating fashion. GU had a 44-24 rebound advantage, grabbing 16 offensive boards. It had a 25-9 advantage in second-chance points. The Bulldogs turned 29 Air Force turnovers into a 37-11 edge in points off of turnovers. Gonzaga had a 40-20 advantage in the paint and 12-2 on fast-break points.
"I like the way we ran in transition, we got easy buckets tonight," Gonzaga Head Coach Lisa Fortier said. "I loved the way we rebounded the ball. Kiara had a great game. The turnovers we had were far too many and a lot of them were unforced. A lot of them were things we were trying to make happen, and that's positive but it would have been nice if we could have half as many. But, overall I'm happy."
Gonzaga finished 55 percent from the field and held the Falcons to 33 percent. The Zags made six of their 15 shots from behind-the-arc, while Air Force was 1-of-11. GU had 16 assists on its 33 made field goals. The Bulldogs were also 16-of-22 from the free-throw line. Air Force made four of its 12 free throws.
The Zags scored 14 of the game's first 15 points, leading 14-1 with 6:38 left in the first quarter. GU led 28-7 at the end of the opening period. The Bulldogs' largest lead of the first half was at halftime, 43-13. Gonzaga's largest lead was 85-31 with 2:55 remaining in the game.
The 53-point winning margin was the largest since GU beat Whitworth 114-40 on Nov. 14, 2010.
Five Bulldogs finished in double-digit scoring led by Elle Tinkle's game-high 13 points. The senior made four of her 10 shots from the field. Kiara Kudron added 12 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Jill Barta, Emma Stach, and Georgia Stirton each had 11 points.
Cortney Porter paced Air Force (0-1) with nine points. Myah Jackson scored eight points. Darby Glaad had four rebounds.
The Zags welcome No. 14 Stanford (1-0) Sunday. The Cardinal opened their regular season with a 74-45 win at UC-Davis Friday. Live coverage will be available on GoZags.com. The game will be broadcast on SWX on TV, and Fox Sports 790 KJRB on the radio. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
